The reading series that we use is published by Scott Foresman. It is a comprehensive program that addresses all areas of literacy development, including; reading comprehension, vocabulary, phonics and spelling, writing, and grammar. Though reading is taught at school, it should be practiced at home daily. The best way to improve reading is to read. A good rule of thumb for third-graders is fifteen to twenty minutes of reading each night.
A spelling pretest will be administered at the beginning of each week. Spelling lists consist of fifteen words that are used to teach and practice the spelling rules that govern our language. After each new spelling skill is presented, students are expected to apply the use of that skill to their writing.
To further develop the skills necessary for good writing, we will also be utilizing Houghton Mifflin’s English program. There will be daily instruction in the proper usage of sentence structure, parts of speech, capitalization, and punctuation.
It is important that all writing be done neatly and legibly. The Zaner-Bloser handwriting program is used to develop and practice proper letter formation. A brief review of the manuscript alphabet will be followed by a thorough course of instruction in cursive writing.
Knowledge and mastery of reading, spelling, vocabulary, language arts, and handwriting skills will be applied in the formal use of the writing process. Pre-writing, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing are the steps that will be used to complete monthly assignments, including; descriptive, comparative, and persuasive essays, as well as personal narratives, letter writing, and poetry.
Informal writing such as journal writing and response writing will also be used across the curriculum. The writing techniques covered in the Reading and Language Arts block will be expected to carry over into Social Studies, Science, and Religion classes.
