The Rich History of Milford Catholic Elementary School
Milford Catholic Elementary School opened its doors for the first time in September 1975. The school was a result of a merger agreement made between St Mary’s Parish (St. Mary’s Grammar School staffed by The Sisters of St. Joseph) and Sacred Heart Parish (Sacred Heart Elementary School staffed by The Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy). After two years of declining enrollment at the latter elementary school, discussions began between representatives of both schools and parishes to assure that quality Catholic education would continue in the town of Milford.
Because each parish elementary school would be represented, it was decided that a neutral name would be given to the new school. It was also decided that the school would be established at the former Sacred Heart Elementary School since the building was larger and in better physical condition than the original granite building of St Mary’s.
For two years both religious communities were active in the school, along with the joint lay faculty. In 1977, The Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy ceased serving the Diocese of Worcester, and the Sisters of St. Joseph remained on staff and in administration.
Little Angels preschool, located on the church grounds, was established to provide a Catholic education for 3 and 4 year olds. In 2008, a before and after school program was instituted to meet the needs of working parents.
In 2010, the Pre-Kindergarten four (4) year old program moved from the Little Angels building to the main school building. The move benefitted both the children and their parents. The children benefitted from new access to the music, art and physical education programs in the main building. The parents now had the option of either a half or full day programs and enjoyed access to the before and after school programs in the same building.
In 2011, the Pre-Kindergarten three (3) year old program was also relocated to the main building for the same reasons.
The history of Milford Catholic Elementary School is one of change and growth. That history continues today as the school offers students a unique educational experience one firmly based on the foundation of the Catholic faith, advanced by a dedicated, highly professional group of teachers and staff, enhanced by the active participation of the students’ parents and implemented by the latest educational techniques and technology.
